Summary Note520 _aThis study sought to determine the journey motif in Bienvenido Santos 'novel entitled The man Who (Though He) Looked Like Robert Taylor and its implication to Christians. The study is qualitative, using the descriptive-analyticc design. It is deemed to find out what the journey undertaken by the character of the story is all about. The archetypal approach, the socio-cultural approach, and the humanistic approach to literature were utilized to embody and analyze the journey motif in the novel. The following summary of findings is presented: 1.From the Philippines, the protagonist of the novel. Solomon King Arrived in Chicago, traveled to other places in the United States, and finally traveled back to settle in Chicago. In short, he went around in a circle. 2. The journey motif is manifested in the novel through the elements of plot, charaters, setting, imagery and theme. 2a. The plot of the novel was organized around the journey motif. aside his physical journey, Sol was engaged in a lot of imaginary travels to fabulous vacation spots, and when his doctor prescribed a terminal vacation from his job, his primary concern shifted to preparations for his final journey. 2b. The choice of characters, aside from the protagonist, also enhances the journey motif. Sol's friends and the people he met were all strangers and expats like himself. 2c. The place settings were likewise carefully chosen to reflect the journey motif. The present action settings include places like Honore Street, Greyhound Bus Depot, Rest Area, and Nursing Home. The past action or flashback settings include Sulucan, funeral parlor, San Francisco warehouse, Alipio Palma's San Francisco house. The imaginary or dream setting are vacation spots and a confused blending of Philippine and American places. 2d. The imagery involves elements such the road or street, vehicles, suitcases, pictures of places, travle agencies and brochures, address books and telephone directories, roadmaps, and a catalogue of places that extends beyond the bounderies of the.
Summary Note520 _aPhilippines and the United States. 2e. The major themes include exile or dislocation, loneliness. Home sickness or nostalgia, and temporality or rootlessness. 3. The symbolic significance of the journey is evinced through cultural awareness, nationalistic awakening, and self-realization. 3a. Culturalawrenessis manifested in three ways: (1) cultural festivity (awake, children's games, Filipino sports, etc.) and cultural valus ( hospitality, Frugality, generosity, industry and hard work, etc.), (2) material culture (Filipino handicrafts, Filipino food, Filipino attire, etc.), and (3) oral literature ( rhymes, jingles and riddles) and language(Filipino terms). 3b. Nationalistic awakening is suggested through an interest manifested by the characters of the novel in Philippine history or dates and events significant to the country's history development. 3c. Self-realization is achieved when Sol remarks, " I don't look like nobody but myself." All his life, he had though the looked like Robert Taylor and had hoped that someone would see the obvious"similarity" between the two men and remark about it. With his self-realization, Sol is able to shift the focus from himself to other people. He is finally able to complete his journey, to come home at the end of the day, after a long, tiresome journey. 4. Solomon King's journey is, in man respects, similar to the Christian's journey. Unless the Christian comes to a realization of the truth about himself, he will just so around in circles, unable to reach his desired destination.
