On the other hand, the ancient practices recognized by Jocano and other authorities that surfaced in the epic were: using charm/spell, magic objects and herbs; jumping as a means of cure; shouting first or saying aloud necessary passages; asking parental consent before courtship; using excuse to discourage suitor; consulting parents for pre-nuptial arrangement; asking the girl's hand in marriage and arranging wedding preparations; exchanging discourse; asking and giving of dowry; solemnizing the wedding; participating in the wedding festivity; informing the wife about whatever commitment the husband makes; seeking advice from grandparents; using expressions of respect; receiving and entertaining suitors; keeping a binukot; keeping valuables in a wooden chest; using gongs to call people's attention; playing the guitar; and dressing according to local norms.
Summary Note520 _aThe distinctive characteristics, beliefs and practices displayed by Labaw Donggon, his family members and other characters represent the image. culture and tradition of the Ilonggongs which reflect the ideals and values which they highly regarded as a distinct group of people. These values categorized as relational, moral and theological were deduced from the abstracted details. The values are foreseen to help the contemporary Ilonggo transform by reviving , inculcating and emulating worthy and morally strengthening values. In its entirely, the Epic of Labaw Donggon is a reflection of the ideology highly cherished by the Iloggongs of the distant past and which is still prevalent at the present time. The epic is a medium through which the nature and culture of Ilonggos in particular, and the Panaynons in general, are known and better understood; it reveals their identity as a member of the Filipino community that as a group of people they have a rich literary and cultural heritage which should be preserved, enhanced and promoted. Finally, this study is an act of recovering and restoring what was there before. It is where the traditional (epic) and the contemporary society meet. Answer to the question of why are the Ilonggos are what they are now is made clear by looking back to the ancestral communities through epic. This is an effort of retrieving the culture and ideology that were already in existence before colonization--an act of understanding the present Ilonggos by looking back in to the past.
