Summary Note520 _aThe Seventh-day Adventist Church is an organization. organizations, it has employees who face many problems. Like other The Pakistan Union is a part of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, and its employees encounter problems in different areas. When their needs are not ful- filled, they become unsatisfied in working for the church. dropout from denominational employment occurs. Thus, This study sought to investigate the problems perceived by the present and former workers which lead many educated and skilled employees to leave mission assignments and migrate to other countries. This study used the descriptive-analytical method of research. The questionnaire was its primary data-gathering instrument, constructed by the researcher after carefully studying related literature and inter- A prelim- viewing Pakistani friends and workers aware of the situation. inary survey was conducted among Pakistani students in Philippine Union College and in Manila who were once workers in the Pakistan Union or were sponsored by the church to study here. After the dry run for the questionnaire and its final approval, it was sent to Pakistan to be administered to Union workers. An alumnus of PUC, one of the workers of the Pakistan Union, and the researchers' brother administered it to the workers there. To the former workers living abroad copies of the questionnaire were sent by mail and administered by close friends. T X Follow-up letters were sent to the respondents until most of the data were received. The data in this research were gathered from 87 out of 108 present and former workers of the Pakistan Union. Forty-nine present and 38 former workers filled out the questionnaires and sent them back to the researcher. The data were statistically treated by using percentages and applying the Z formula for testing the difference between two proportions. Thi-square test was used for finding the relationship between the status of respondents and their perceived problems in five different areas. The acceptance or rejection of the null hypotheses was based on the 0.05 level of significance. Results of the analysis of data from the five problem areas of the present and former workers indicated the following findings arranged according to Maslow's hierarchy of needs. 1. Difference Between Present and Former Workers Regarding the Problems They Perceived to Be the Reasons of the Church Workers Leaving Denominational Employment. a. Physiological Needs. Both respondents xi The two groups of workers did not differ significantly in their perceptions regarding the political problems in the country. To them this was not a problem. C. Love and Belonging Needs. Their perceptions did not differ significantly regarding family conflict. a problem. This was not More former workers did not perceive invitations from their relatives abroad a reason for their dropping the work and leaving the country. More former workers did not perceive loss of first love for the church as a cause for their dropping the work and leaving the country. More former workers perceived favoritism, as well as desire for higher education, as significant causes for their dropping the work and leaving the country. d. Self-esteem Needs. The respondents' perception of problems affecting their self-esteem, such as unrecognized achievements and abilities, and administrators' decisions, did not differ significantly. Both groups agreed that these were, however, problematic areas. e. Self-Actualization Needs. Perceptions of present and former employees regarding positions reserved for the expatriates differed significantly. There were more former workers who perceived this as a reason for their dropping church employment and leaving the country. X11 From the findings of this study, the following conclusions are drawn: 1. Since the former workers agreed that the invitation of their relatives was not the cause of their going abroad, there must be other reasons for their leaving. 2. Because the former workers disagreed that they had lost their first love for the church, they could be disenchanted with other aspects of church work. 3. Favoritism practiced by administrators and leadership posts intended for expatriates were perceived as key factors for giving up denominational jobs, especially by former workers. 4. The quest for higher education, even on their own, was a significant factor in former workers leaving for countries abroad. The conclusions brought out the following recommendations: For Administrative Practice 1. That capable and qualified national workers be provided more opportunities for further education and leadership positions. 2. That the merit system be considered for employment and promotion. For Further Research 1. That the Pakistan Union Mission give study to determine the causes of workers' disenchantment in other aspects of church work. 2. That a study of other causes of brain drain be made.
