Summary Note | 520 | _a | Literature is a faithful reproduction of life. It mirrors the soul of its people. It reflects man's ideas thoughts, emotions, and dreams. It depicts man's past and future. It is man's story. It is here where man can find his identity. Hence for a person to understand his own nation and ultimately unravel his own identity, he must read read hi nation's literature is a vehicle for understanding a nation's spirit. It is here where man can find his identity. Hence, for a person to understand his own nation and ultimately unravel his own identity, he must read his nation's literatur. He must trace his roots by scanning the pages of his literature. It is therefore assumed that since literature is life, the short stories embody what a group of people holds near and dear__their ideas, dreams and values. Specifically, this study attemped to answer the following questions: 1. What is the portrait of the Ilokano soul as reflected in the selected short stories published in Kurditan? 2. Waht uniquely Ilokano characteristics are evident in the short stories? 3. What do these characteristics reveal about the values held by Ilokanos? 4. How are these characteristics presented through the characters, settings, dialogues, and symbols used in the short stories. The methods and procedures in capturing the portrait of the Ilokano soul through the short stories are follows: 1 A close and analytical reading of the selected short stories. 2. Extraction of the different characteristics from the selected short stories. 3. Classifying the characteristics into the values enumerated by Amano (the basis of this study) 4. Analysis of each of the characteristics with the aid of some books on literary analysis. Uniquely Ilokano characteristics are evident in the short stories. They are religiosity, honesty, patience, courtesy, frugality, resourceful, industry, friendliness,helpfulness, the love of parties, the awareness of the word "hiya". These characteristics reveal the moral/ethical, cultural/traditional, and social values of the. | |
