Summary Note | 520 | _a | The study determined the relationship between study habits and reading comprehension skills of teacher education students. Reading comprehension skills considered were literal, inferential, and critical levels and vocabulary. Study habits centered on time management, using the library, concentration and taking notes. The study used descriptive design to determine the reading comprehension skills and study habits of the respondents. It also used correlational design in determining the relationship between study habis and reading comprehension skills of the education students. The results show thst majority of the respondents' fathers and mothers have attained or reached high school. The least number of the respondents' parents were those on the graduate level. The most number of books found in the homes of the respondents were religious ones followed by dictionary and story books. Encyclopedia and others not specified were among the least number found in the resppondents' homes. Most of the respondents were encouraged to read and studyby their parents, guardians and siblings. Majority had observed their parents and other adults intheir homes read and had been read to when they were young. Most respondents had also established study period. Moreover, majority of the respondents had peers who encouraged them to study, helped them in doing school work and found studying with friends effective. Majority also indicated that they went out with peers to enjoy themselves and that they went strolling around the campus. In terms of literal, Inferential and critical levels and vocabulary, results show that the respondents had not reached the expected minimum competency level in reading comprehension. Therefore, these reveals that the education students had not mastered the skills method study. The repondents manifested the positive study habits such as often setting time for study, making use of the library. Using their concentration skills and taking notes. However, sometimes they engaged in negative habits like.
Summary Note | 520 | _a | joining unimportant events, cramming for exams, and trying to take down in their notes everything the instructor said. Also sometimes, they tended to daydream and their minds wwandered while studying. Except for using the library, study habits on time management, concentration and note taking did not show any correlation to reading comprehension. Other variables which showed significant relationship to reading comprehension are the fathers' educational status, availability of magazines and inspirational books, encouragement of one's siblings to reading (although negatively) and going out with peers for enjoyment. Moreover, observing parents read, studying with peers and finding it effective were positively related to critical related to critical level of comprehension. Parents' educational status and availability of story books, magazines, heeeealth and inspirational books were relted to habits on time management. Moreover, availability of magazines, heealth, imspirational and other types of literature not specified were related to habits using the library. Availability of dictionary in the home showed relationship to habits of concentration. Reading of parents to the respondents when these students were still young and encouragement and help of siblings in doing assignments reveeal positive correlation to concentration. Establishment of study period is related to time management, concentration and taking notes. The only behavior in association with peers that showed significant relationship to time management and concentration is studying with peers. Reading comprehension can be best predicted by using the library, availability of magazines, time management, encouragement to reading by siblings; and reciprocal help between the student and his/her peers in doing school work or requirements. However, negative correlations exist between reading comprehension skills and time management and encouragement of siblings to one's reading. The study concludes that the study habits and reading comprehension are.
Summary Note | 520 | _a | independent from each other, except for using the library. Moreover, reading comprehension skills are significantly related to other variables of the study.
