Summary Note520 _aRecurrent challenges, such as delayed service delivery, low quality reporting, and unethical practices, among others, bedevil performance in Local Government Institutions (LGIs) in Ghana. The study considered the mediating effects of chieftaincy on the relationship between normative ethics and strategic management practices on LGIs' organizational performance. Out of the sample size of 580 employees from a population of 1,104 using the G-power sample size calculator, a total number of 531 responded to the distributed questionnaire. Results revealed unethical behaviors in local government institutions. Results further revealed that, to a large extent, local government institutions use strategic management practices and the degree of influence of chieftaincy in local government institutions was high. Chieftaincy fully mediated the relationship between normative ethics and local government performance. The study recommends, among others, improved ethical control measures to affect local government institutions’ performance.
