General Note500 _aThesis (Master of Arts in Psychology) - Adventist University of the Philippines, Puting Kahoy, Silang, Cavite, 2023.
Summary Note520 _aThis qualitative study is concerned with describing the life events and experiences of individuals with Substance Use Disorder (SUD) who had multiple drug relapses. The study employed eight male participants who have gone through rehabilitation due to substance use more than two times and are currently in an in-patient residential treatment facility. A semi-structured interview schedule was developed to solicit detailed descriptions from participants concerning their drug use and their relapse experience. Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis was utilized by the researcher. The study identified the loss of a loved one and having achievements as experiences that led to relapse. Given that not only negative experiences but even positive experiences could lead to relapse, it is important to note how individual differences should be considered in providing treatment 3 strategies. Participants also faced challenges such as cravings, boredom, and peer pressure. Relapse experiences provided insights and new perspectives, such as recognizing the importance of cultivating humility, the realization of the true nature of happiness, and a deeper sense of appreciation for loved ones’ sacrifices. One main finding is that drug users tend to look at abstinence as the treatment goal. After multiple relapses, they realize that recovery must be aimed at developing values and personal integrity. Moreover, spirituality is found to be of significant importance in preventing relapse. The interplay between biological, psychological, social, and spiritual factors supports a holistic approach to treatment and prevention of relapse. Lastly, the findings of the study highlight the importance of family involvement in the treatment process.
