Summary Note520 _aReflecting social issues in contemporary painting could be challenging particularly in the Philippines setting. Limited studies investigates the contemporary painting as reflective of social issues in the Philippines or an expression beyond the artist's personal expressions and imagination. It addressed the audience's way of seeking meanings, the audiences initial reactions, and the connection of the audiences' and the artists' experiences to the reflected social issues. Directed by the theory of instrumentalism, this study utilized semiology and purposive sampling technique was used to gather the six participants. Emerging themes were identified using narrative analysis. Study concludes that a mismatch can occur between the interpretations of the audience members and the confirmed concepts or messages from the artist as exemplified when the first painting was interpreted. For future studies, the use of one definite social issue is the paintings, field of social sciences for the audiences' interest, and equal level of depth of the artists' presentations to establish more cohesive responses is recommended.
