Summary Note520 _aActivated coconut shell charcoal has a lot of uses that includes the possible utilization in the oral cavity. Theoretically it can be used as a teeth whitening agent; and presumably with antibacterial property. Integral so these claims is the adsorption capacity inherent to the material. The study was conducted to determine the antibacteriral and adsorption properties of an activated coconut shell charcoal at different concentrations of 100.1; 75.0 and 50.0%, respectively to Fusobacterium nucleatum and Streptococcus salivarius using zones of inhibition. Positive controls; that were; pure toothpaste with charcoal and pure charcoal were used as standard. Normal laboratory procedures were followed by the accredited laboratory of the Department of Science and Technology where the sample was submitted for analysis. Results revealed that there was no antibacterial property against the selected oral pathogens as exhibited by the zones of inhibition using the various concentrations set. However, there was an adsorption property identified against the same oral pathogens because of the absence of zones of inhibition. In depth studies about the active compounds of the pure toothpaste and adsorption capacity of the activated charcoal in terms of microbial count before and after using the material are recommended.
