Methods: Dental plaque index was measured before and after the use of Acacia extract and Hexetine as mouthwash with the turesky et al modified Quigley Hein Plaque Index (TQHPI), administered to 15 proper dental students of Adventist University of the Philippines during second semester School year 2009 - 2010. Data were analyzed using dependent related to test. Results: The results of the study shows that the dental plaque index score has a mean gain 0.08 a positive value which means the dental plaque formation is still increases a few hours after using distilled water as mouthwash. Using hexetidine as mouthwash shows that the mean of dental plaque index score was also increased to a value of 0.03 the value is small that make the statistical result that using Hexetidine can control and prevent that was no significant value is greater than 0.05, These means that there was no significant change in the dental plaque index after using Hexetidine. Acacia extract as mouthwash is effective as shown by the result of the study, the main gain score is negative (0.01), which mean that the dental plaque index score decrease after using Acacia extract as mouthwash. The result of the study also that there is no significant change of the dental plaque index which is a very good result that indicate dental plaque formation is not only controlled but also it was decreased with acacia mouthrinse. Conclusion: The use of Acacia leaves extract which is freely available nationwide is great aid to manage and prevent bacterial plaque formation for oral hygiene applicable t underprivileged community. The result of the study shows that there no significant difference in effectiveness of the extract of the Acacia, Samanea saman Merr. to commercially available product that contains Hexetidine in inhibiting dental plaque formation for two hours of use.
